Makerspaces
A makerspace is an interactive, open space that fosters innovation through hands-on experimentation. LCCC offers two makerspaces, located at the main campus and Tamaqua site, allowing students to take concepts learned through lecture to real-world application. This creates learning opportunities for students in:
Main Campus Design Den
The main campus makerspace, known as the Design Den, can accommodate groups of 25 and offers flexible seating arrangements, an array of 3D printers, the hydroponic Flex Farm, a live moss wall, and more. The Design Den is a valuable resource especially to the teacher education program, as it provides a space to instruct teacher candidates on how to bridge the gap between STEM and the early learning classroom.
Tamaqua Makerspace
The makerspace at the Tamaqua site can accommodate groups of 20 people and has a wide range of technology and interactive materials for any inquiring minds to discover. It is a state-of-the-art facility, open to LCCC students to tinker, create, and innovate. The Tamaqua Makerspace features a Lego wall, a 3D printer, and a workbench filled with different materials used to foster creativity.
Features of the Makerspace
Flex farm: In our hydroponic farm, we have the ability to grow plants without soil, where nutrient-rich water feeds plant roots. This is an energy-efficient way to grow plants without soil in a controlled environment.
3D printers: 3D printers create physical objects layer by layer using materials such as plastic, metal, or resin-based on digital 3D models.
Ozobots/robots: Ozobots are small robots that can be coded and programmed to follow color-coded lines and carry out simple commands to teach programming and robotics concepts.
Green screen: The green screen can be used in video production to insert different backgrounds or visual elements during post-production, fostering creative and interactive learning experiences.
Both makerspaces are available to reserve for:
- Professional development
- Demonstrations
- Classes
- Summer camps
- Educational days/events
- Retreats/team building events
